In the enchanted expanse of the great Kalahari
Where the red sands and clay beds transported me to Mars
Where the stars bloomed like white lilies in the great galactic ocean
Set alight by the orange fires of a new dawn
In a place out of this world
I left a life behind
As I was lying on the desert floor
Hanging onto every conscious word
With the taste of blood and sand on my tongue
I learned true humility
There is no greater way to learn of gratitude
Than standing on the precipice of losing everything
I didn’t know if I would live to see another day
But I knew that I was loved
Perhaps, for the first time in my life, I knew that I was loved
Was it the ancient spirits that ordained a miracle?
Or the bleeding hearts of man that knows of loss
The ‡Khomani San saved us
In a place where our government failed us
They were there long before any of us
On the day my path crossed with Elvis and that Rock
I died and lived yet again
